    Link Building Glossary

    • Link
Clickable links to your website from other websites.

    • Link Building
Locating or creating content on other websites and embedding, or placing, links to your site on them. Also known as backlinking.

    • PageRank
Google uses PageRank to determine how your page or website ranks against other websites. PageRank is based on hundreds of factors both on and off page. Essentially a popularity contest where part of the score is based on how closely your page matches up with what Google thinks good pages should look like and the umber of inbound links your page has from other sites with good PageRank themselves.

    • Inbound Links
Links from web pages, directories, websites, or top level domains to your site. Also known as inward links, backlinks, incoming links, and inlinks.

    • One-way Inbound Links
Inbound Links that point at your site with no reciprocal link back out to the inlinking website. Search engines give these higher value.

    • Outbound Links
Links that go out from your website to other websites. Outbound links drain your site’s total PageRank. Reciprocal links are one way to mitigate this but are dependent on the PageRank of the sites at each end of the reciprocal link.

    • Reciprocal Links
A reciprocal Link is an inbound link to your site that corresponds to an outbound link to that specific linking site. These are not as beneficial as One-way Inbound Links.

    • Internal Links
These are links linking the web pages within your website.

    • External Links
Inbound or outbound links to your site rather than internal links.

    • Deep Linking
Inbound Links to pages other than then your home page. This raises the ranking of the target pages when targeted keywords are used as the anchor text for the inbound links.

    • Keywords
Keywords or keyword terms are words or phrases search for on Google, Bing, Yahoo and other search engines to find relevant information to that search term. The best sites are built around a set of keywords that have been targeted to rank well on the search results pages.

    • Anchor Text
Anchor Text is the visible and clickable text of the links that point to your site, these are frequently different colored and underlined. Having this anchor text be or include the targeted search term for the page that the link points to increases the value of the link.

    • Search Engine Results Page (SERP)
The SERP are the pages everyone sees in Google and on the other search engines. Getting your website to appear as close to the top of page one of the SERPs for a specific keyword or search term is the goal of Search Engine Optimization.
